A charming B&B which was built in 1924 for Mr. Richard Haws and his wife Marie. It is a two-story brick Arts & Crafts home with a beautiful view of Lake Michigan situated at the highest point in St. Joseph. In 1947 the home was sold to Dr. Harold Fowler and his wife Marjory. Dr. Fowler established a dental practice in lovely downtown St. Joseph. Mrs. Fowler was very involved with the Twin City Symphony and would often invite Van Cliburn, the pianist, to stay as their house guest.
This home has been operating as a B&B since the early 1990’s. Bob and Lori Stanwood purchased The Chestnut House in 2006. They completely renovated the first two floors and restored the original 1920’s woodwork in the front rooms. The Chestnut House re-opened July, 2007 for a number of years.
